Where are All The Soul Singers

Diana Ross's landmark 1980 album, diana, was h...Image via Wikipedia I remember coming up as a kid and dam near every radio station played R&B. Its seems like soul singers and other songwriters have stop appearing on the live stage. I don't mean the R and B with the hip hop base music to it, I mean the real songs that made you cry and feel like there was love in the air. Did all of are soulful artist and songwriters like Gamble and Huff just disappear. Motown had some of the best song writers on the planet when it came to writing for artist like Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, and a host of others. Today in the year 2011, I haven't seen any soul singers get the praise that most artist got back in the 60's and 70's. I think many artist that are soul singers have a tough time getting there music heard or even listen to by urban radio.

When The Group Disagrees

The Score (album)Image via Wikipedia Being a group can be a challenge when you are an artist, because share and share alike it the key word among the group. Band members feel like they should get the solo part and everyone should understand. Writing songs can be a mess cause no one can agree on titles and concepts for the songs being created. I know you have heard the stories of how groups have broke up like N.W.A, The Fugees, Danity Cane, Good Mob and many other groups have fallen victim to music industry strife. So, whats the point to this blog, well the point is that even though you may be in a group you must learn how to compromise to get whats best for the group. If tensions grow high in the group due to management problems, money, or public realtions then bow out gracefully.

Getting Songs on Soundtracks

NEW YORK - JANUARY 09: (L-R) David Kwok, Harry...Image by Getty Images via @daylife Getting your song on a sound track is not as easy as it may sound but it is a great way to build exposure. Now to get your music placed on a major motion picture sound track you would have to go through a major record label. What am I talking about here is getting your music into indie movie which still has great reach because you are getting into the film and Television market. For example, going through a company like Taxi to get your songs pushed to TV is not a bad idea. Also, linking up with up and coming film producers can be a great way to get your music placed on sound tracks because they are the next generation of film producers.

Creating Songs in Studio

STUDIO S.O.N.Image via Wikipedia
Working in the studio can be a grueling process. Creating songs are also a big part of the creating process. I have been in the studio many times and have noticed that some of my best work comes in the process of recording. Many people can't work around others in the studio, and that could be a problem for you in the future. My suggestion to you as a songwriter and an artist is that you should rent some studio time and go in cold turkey and just see what you can come up with, it would be a good exercise to create from scratch in and unknown place.
