Here are ten tips to help manage the legal and business side of your songwriting.


1. Figure Out Songwriting Credits, Now!

If you're writing songs with others, as soon as you finish the song, agree with your collaborators as to how to split potential revenues. If you wait until after you have a deal or record the song, you could end up sorting out credits and payments with band members who have long since left the group. Many bands also include non-writing members in the income. You don't need a formal contract on who gets the credits; an informal written agreement will suffice.


2. How to Decide Who Gets Songwriting Credits

A songwriting copyright is awarded to those who jointly contributed to the song's structure, chord progressions, and lyrics. This can be anyone, even the members of the rhythm section (in many songs -- especially in rock, pop, and dance music -- a bass or drum part is so integral to the song that it becomes as important as the melody). Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind as a songwriter is to not let your inner critic paralyze your creativity. The moment you have a negative thought, banish it to the back of your mind and just keep writing and pushing on! This method is all about generating as many ideas as you can, quality control comes later.

TECHNIQUE ONE: Create a chord sequence or riff on your instrument of choice, either loop it on your computer or just play it over and over while improvising lyrics and melodies over the top. Your aim here is to come up with as many ideas for your melody as you possibly can, don't worry about whether your lyrics make sense or not, you can redraft those later. I usually don't stop until I've come up with at least 10 or more ideas.

TECHNIQUE TWO: Find a drum or percussion loop and write as many different songs as you can over the top of it. Vary your chords and riffs and really try to make each attempt different to the last. Again I aim for 10 as a minimum

When you complete a project there a several things you should look for that can bring you revenue from your writing. I will just share a few things that I think will help you exploit your talent. You can take you songs and make a lyric book or poem book. Secondly, movies are always derived from a song or a book or some form of written work. Finally, the use of video is growing more and more if you haven't made some form of videos then you may want to consider that. Wuz up everybody, I have been off the scene for a minute but I am back. I want to take a minute to talk about the artist Brittany Spears. Brittany is planning something big and you will be the victim of juiced up media mind confusing game that has kept you glued to the Tv for almost a year. Someone wrote the script for this story on how Brittany is making her come back. I saw on the front page of MSN that Brit was doing dance rehearsals for her upcoming show. Her album will have the best songwriters in the business to make sure she gets a good point across for the album to sale. Brittany to my knowledge is not a great writer. When her albums drops it will sale like crazy because of the hype and all the bullshit that she has went through. At the end of the day the songwriting will be what carries everything over.
